Quick Slants:
Richmond is two games into its 125th season of football and its fourth under head coach Dave Clawson.
Coming off its bye week, Richmond looks to keep the offense going after a record-setting victory over Northeastern on Sept. 8. In the 49-14 rout of the Huskies, the Spider scored their most points in a conference game in 20 years, while setting school records for rushing yards and total offense.
Bucknell, led by fifth-year head coach Tim Landis (a 1986 graduate of nearby Randolph-Macon College), has dropped two straight and comes off a 38-14 setback at Cornell last Saturday.
Senior RB Tim Hightower was named the National Offensive Player of the Week (Sports Network) on Sept. 10 for his 246-yard, 4 TD rushing display against Northeastern.
The Spiders are playing their third-consecutive game away from UR Stadium -- and fourth-straight when you consider last season's finale at William & Mary. Richmond is 8-4 on the road since 2005.
The Spiders are in their first year of competition in the Colonial Athletic Association. CAA Football, regarded as one the nation's top Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) conferences, is comprised of the same 12 teams that played in the Atlantic 10 Conference until last season.
Last Meeting:
Richmond scored 27 points in the middle two quarters to pull away from Bucknell, 48-21, at UR Stadium on Sept. 23, 2006. The Spiders, after scoring 58 points in a win over VMI the week prior, set a new school record for points in back-to-back games. Josh Vaughan rushed for two touchdowns as the Spiders closed out their non-conference schedule. Tim Hightower carried the ball 14 times for 95 yards and Vaughan collected 88 yards on 12 carries. Eric Ward was 9-of-23 passing for 165 yards, including a 65-yard TD strike.
Up Next:
The Spiders play on the UR Stadium grass for the first time since last November when they host New Hampshire in a CAA Football contest next Saturday on Family Weekend. Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m. in game that will be televised live by CN8, The Comcast Network.
