July 9, 2008

RICHMOND, Va. - Richmond men's golf coach Adam Decker qualified for the 2008 SunTrust State Open of Virginia, to be played July 17-20 at Independence Golf Club in Midlothian.

Decker shot a 3-under-par 69 in the Middle-Atlantic Professional Golf Association (MAPGA) qualifier on June 23rd at Independence.

The SunTrust State Open of Virginia is a 72-hole, stroke play event with the field limited to 168 golfers (80 eligible Virginia PGA members and apprentices, 80 eligible amateurs, the defending champion, professional Josh Meador, and seven Open qualifier spots). The field will be cut to the low 70 players and ties following the completion of 36 holes.

Decker, who is entering his fourth year as the head coach at Richmond, will be teeing off for the first round at 7:57 on Thursday, July 17.

The former All-American at Penn State played six years of professional golf, including PGA Tour and Nationwide Tour events.

Decker led the Spiders to the NCAA Championships in 2006, earning Virginia State Coach of the Year honors. The Long Island, N.Y. native has guided Richmond to two tournament titles in his three years as head coach.
