Matt O'Toole enters his fifth season as an assistant coach for the Spiders, having served on Jeff Gettler's staff since the 2004 season. O'Toole helped lead Richmond to a third-place finish in the Atlantic 10 and a berth in the conference semifinals in 2006. "Matt has continued in the roll our assistant coaches have played over the years, doing an outstanding job of providing great coaching, leadership and a fresh perspective to our players and our program," Gettler said. O'Toole came to Richmond after serving as an assistant coach at Wheaton College in 2002 and 2003. He helped guide the Lyons to a 34-9-2 record, the 2003 NEWMAC Championship and a berth in the NCAA Division III semifinals. The Norwell, Mass. native has a NSCAA Advanced National Coaching License, a NSCAA National Coaching License and a USSF "B" Coaching License. He has coached at the youth, high school and college levels. After starring at Thayer Academy in Massachusetts, O'Toole was a four-year starter at Providence College, earning NEISL Senior All-Star honors in 2001. He went on to play professionally for five years in the United Soccer League (USL) for the Atlanta Silverbacks, Carolina Dynamo, Connecticut Wolves and the Richmond Kickers. O'Toole has also trained with several MLS clubs and the Bohemians FC of Ireland's Eircom Premier League. O'Toole and his wife Kate reside in Richmond. |
