Box Score

PITTSBURGH, Pa. - Freshman Houston Oldham scored with 2:07 remaining to give the Richmond men's soccer team a 2-1 victory Saturday over Manhattan to win the Duquesne Invitational.

Senior Kern Gardiner got out wide and sent laid a low hard ball across the face of the goal, where Oldham was there to knock it into the back of the net for his first collegiate goal.

The win was the Spiders' second in as many games in the Duquesne Invitational, giving them the tournament title. Richmond sophomore goalkeeper Brock Tomlinson was named the tournament's MVP, while Oldham, Gardiner and senior Fynn Glover were named to the All-Tournament Team.

"Overall this was a good weekend," Richmond head coach Clint Peay said. "It's always a challenge to play back-to-back days, but we got two results and we were able to rest some bodies for the week ahead."

Sophomore Ty Williams had put the Spiders on the board in the 15th minute when senior Stephen Chareczko took a shot that was blocked, but Williams came up with the rebound and put it past the keeper.

"Both goals were scrappy," Peay said. "The first one was like a pinball, it ricocheted around and Ty was able to tuck it in from six yards out."

Manhattan's Deia Nasser tied the match in the 29th minute, and that is how the score remained until the 88th minute.

Richmond out-shot Manhattan 14-11 and sophomore goalkeeper Brock Tomlinson made five saves in goal.

"We're excited to get two results of the weekend and weekend and we look forward to VCU, which will be a very competitive match."

The Spiders (2-2) play at city-rival VCU on Tuesday at 7 p.m. downtown at Sports Backers Stadium.
