Richmond Men's Soccer Drowns Howard

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - In the final game of the UR/Nike Challenge Cup presented by Marriott, the University of Richmond Spiders shutout the Bison of Howard 3-0. With the win, Richmond grabbed the tournament championship for the fourth time and second consecutive year.

Sophomore midfielder Paul Kelly (Durban, South Africa), sophomore forward Stephen Douglas, and freshman back Chris Lahoud (Fort Worth, Texas) received All-Tournament honors. Junior back Chris Zuk (Baltimore, Md.) garnered MVP for the UR/Nike Challenge Cup.

Douglas netted the game-winner in the fifth minute of the game. Douglas, unassisted on the play, nailed the ball into the left corner of the box. Richmond continued to score in the first period when Lahoud fed sophomore forward Warren Cunningham (Durban, South Africa) who sent the ball to freshman forward Colin Vint (Fairfax, Va.) for the goal.

Spiders' sophomore Kelly added to the tally in the 87th minute on a pass from junior midfielder D.J. Tognarelli (Richmond, Va.) and Lahoud. In his first collegiate game, junior keeper Jacob Hofmeister (Canal Winchester, Ohio) seized his first shutout. Hofmeister posted two saves against Howard keeper Jason Williams' seven.

In the first game of the night, Lehigh and VCU wrestled into sudden victory overtime. Rams' Carlos Garay booted the game-winner in the 93rd minute to clinch the victory 2-1. Lehigh's Manbaj Gill and VCU's Petrut Bumbanac grabbed one goal for their teams.

The Spiders return to action this Wednesday, September 18 at 7:00 p.m. against Wake Forest at First Market Stadium.
