UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - The Richmond men's soccer team lost to No. 12 ranked Virginia Tech 1-0 on Tuesday night.

The Spiders, who had defeated the then No. 16 ranked Hokies 3-2 in overtime last September, played Virginia Tech to a scoreless first half. The Hokies (6-1-1) broke that tie eight minutes into the second half when they won a header in the middle of the field, split the defense and Stefan Hock scored his third goal of the season.

"We were a little lethargic in the first half, but we settled down in the second half," Richmond head coach Jeff Gettler said. "On their goal they won a header, split the defense, got it in the back and created a mini-breakaway.

"We battled back and got better," Gettler said. "We were pretty competitive. I wouldn't say it was one of our best performances, we did alright."

Richmond senior goalkeeper Eric Sciocchetti made 11 saves in net.

The Spiders (3-5) are halfway through a stretch of four games against teams that played in the NCAA Tournament last fall. Richmond plays at Old Dominion on Saturday at 7 p.m. and then hosts two-time defending champion Rhode Island in a non-conference match-up on Oct. 7 at noon.
