UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - The Richmond men's soccer team played to a double-overtime scoreless tie with two-time defending Atlantic 10 Champion Rhode Island in a non-conference match on Sunday afternoon at First Market Stadium.

The Spiders and Rams do not play each other during the conference schedule, so they set up the non-conference game as a final tune-up before Atlantic 10 play begins for both teams next weekend. In a rematch of Rhode Island's 1-0 win in the 2006 Atlantic 10 semifinals, the two teams played through 110 minutes without a goal as temperatures soared into the 90s.

"Rhode Island will be one of the better teams in the Atlantic 10 and I expect them to be in the semifinals come November," Richmond head coach Jeff Gettler said. "This was a good last tune-up before conference play. They tested us, but I thought we were good today."

Richmond junior goalkeeper Eric Sciocchetti made eight saves as he recorded his third shutout of the season and the 12th of his career. Sciocchetti is now one shutout out of a tie for fifth on the Richmond career list for shutouts.

Defensively we were fantastic and Sciocchetti was great once again," Gettler said. "I thought some of our offensive players were off their form, but Delano (Pierre) played the best he has in some time."

The Spiders (3-6-1) open Atlantic 10 play on Saturday at George Washington with a 3 p.m. start.
