Men's Soccer Comes Up Short At Dayton

Oct. 10, 2008

Box Score

DAYTON, Ohio - The Richmond men's soccer team had a 2-1 lead over Dayton in the Atlantic 10 opener Friday, but the Flyers would come back to win 4-3 and extend their home winning streak to 17 games.

Dayton improved to 7-2-1 overall, having won its sixth-straight match. The Flyers improved to 6-0 at home this season and have not lost at Baujan Field since Oct. 28, 2006.

"This was great college soccer game," Richmond head coach Jeff Gettler said. "We had a lot of positives, a lot of guys played very well. Dayton was a good team, they were big and strong, but our guys battled like crazy and really represented us well. It's tough playing on the road and especially here, where they are undefeated, but the guys did a really good job."

The Flyers jumped out to a 1-0 lead just 3:53 into the match on a header to the far post by Alex Torda off of a set piece. Richmond answered less than two minutes later when senior Brennan Lincoln used a bicycle at the top of the box to put a shot into the upper 90 of the far post for his third goal of the season.

Richmond took a 2-1 lead in the 12th minute when freshman Ty Williams collected a punt by goalkeeper Brock Tomlinson and sent a pass to sophomore Jake Russell, who found the back of the net.

The Spiders lead lasted for nearly 20 minutes, but in the matter of 12 seconds Richmond found itself down 3-2. Alex Torda scored on a header off of a corner 31:06 into the first half and 31:18 into the half Joe Olwig scored an unassisted goal to put the Flyers up one.

"We lost both of our marking backs, Cass Meadows and Russell Himelein, to injury, so that hurt," Gettler said.

Florian DeCamps scored in the 71st minute off an assist from Tommy Watkins to put the Flyers up 4-2, but Richmond sophomore Justin Grove scored his first goal of the season on a header in the 86th minute to cut the gap to 4-3. Juniors Stephen Chareczko and David Koepfer had assists on Grove's second-career goal.

"We chased the game to the end but couldn't get the fourth goal," Gettler said.

The Spiders return to action on Sunday when they play at Xavier at 1 p.m.
