Men's Soccer Ties Xavier, 1-1

Oct. 12, 2008

Box Score

CINCINNATI, Ohio - Sophomore Jake Russell scored his team-leading fourth goal of the season as the Richmond men's soccer team played to a 1-1 double-overtime tie with Xavier on Sunday.

"We continue to take small steps forward," Richmond head coach Jeff Gettler said. "Playing away in the A-10 is tough. We took one point this weekend, it isn't what we were looking for, but it's a start."

Russell gave the Spiders a 1-0 lead in the 12th minute when he took a cross from freshman Ty Williams and deposited a shot in the right corner.

That lead held up until the final minute of the first half when the Musketeers were awarded a penalty kick, which Ricardo Sutherland converted.

That was the only goal Richmond keeper Brock Tomlinson would allow. Tomlinson made six saves in net.

"We had good goalkeeping today from Brock," Gettler said. "Fynn Glover played well all weekend, while Brennan Lincoln, Daniel Larkin and Malcolm Joseph played very well today. The guys battled, they competed. A lot of great things showed up this weekend."

The Spiders return home to host Saint Joseph's on Friday at 8 p.m. as part of a doubleheader with the women's team. Richmond also hosts Temple next Sunday at 2:30 p.m.
