UMass Overtakes Men's Soccer, 2-1

Oct. 24, 2008

Box Score

AMHERST, Mass. - The Richmond men's soccer team lost to Massachusetts 2-1 in overtime on Friday afternoon when Chris Roswess scored in the 99th minute of play.

The game was scoreless until the 83rd minute when Jake Russell won a challenge with the goalkeeper and the ball was put into an empty net off of a Massachusetts defender.

With 2:25 remaining in the match, Mark DeSantis scored from close range on an assist by Andrew Henshaw to tie the match.

Then in overtime Roswess scored off of a corner kick by DeSantis to give the Minutemen the victory.

"We were sluggish at the start, we made some subs and it picked up a big, but it still wasn't great," Richmond head coach Jeff Gettler said. "We picked up play a little bit in the second half and we were two minutes away from getting a win, but we weren't able to close it out. We were right there and every chance to win it, but we gave it away."

Richmond goalkeeper Brock Tomlinson made 10 saves in goal.

The Spiders, who play at Rhode Island on Sunday at 1 p.m., dropped to 2-10-2 overall and 1-2-2 in the conference.
