Men's Soccer Forces 2-2 Tie With Rhode Island
Oct. 26, 2008
KINGSTON, R.I. - The Richmond men's soccer team overcame a two goal deficit, two broken noses and a penalty kick awarded in the final minute of the second overtime to earn a 2-2 tie in a physical game at Rhode Island on Sunday. The Spiders trailed 2-0 with 25 minutes remaining, but senior Brennan Lincoln and sophomore Jake Russell scored goals off restarts to tie the match. With one minute remaining in the second overtime, Rhode Island was awarded a penalty kick, but Erkko Puranen's attempt at a hat trick was thwarted when Richmond goalkeeper Brock Tomlinson made the save. "That was a big time save for Brock," Richmond head coach Jeff Gettler said. "That was an unbelievable game, that was a great result." After Puranen gave the Rams (6-5-3, 2-1-2 Atlantic 10) a 20 lead with goals in the 20th and 61st minute, the Spiders did not cave. On a restart in the 66th minute, freshman Ty Williams took a free kick and Lincoln headed it into the back of the net for his fifth goal of the season. Then Russell booted a free kick into the top right corner of the goal from 35 yards out in the 85th minute to tie the game. "We fought back and got two great goals on restarts," Gettler said. "We got at them, we lost Malcolm Joseph and Russell to broken noses, but we just stepped up and were all over the field." The Spiders (2-10-3, 1-2-3 Atlantic 10) return home for their final three games of the season. Richmond hosts George Washington on Saturday at 7 p.m.
