UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - The University of Richmond men's soccer team lost to No. 14 ranked Duquesne 1-0 on a goal with 2:37 remaining in the first overtime Friday night at First Market Stadium.

The Spiders played on even terms with the Dukes, out-shooting Duquesne 7-5 in the second half, but Derek Freund was ale to score his first goal of the season off an assist from Pat Dillon in the 98th minute to hand Richmond its third-straight loss. Duquesne finished the game with just a 12-11 advantage in shots.

"The boys brought a lot to the field tonight," Richmond head coach Jeff Gettler said. "This was a very good performance for us."

The two teams played a very even game with limited scoring opportunities. Duquesne took five shots on goal and Richmond had four. Spider sophomore Eric Sciocchetti (Wallingford, Pa.) made four saves in net, including three diving stops that kept Duquesne off the scoreboard. Duquesne keeper Zach Varga made four saves to post his 22nd-career shutout.

On the Dukes overtime game winner, Freund took a pass from Dillon and blasted a shot from 20 yards out that made it just inside the left post to give Duquesne its third-straight win and eighth in the last nine games.

"Duquesne found a way to win, that's why their in first," Gettler said. "Other than that one goal though, I think we posed a lot of questions and challenges to them. This was a good, tight game. We had some good combinations that created some problems for them."

Richmond did have a few scoring opportunities, including shots by senior Colin Vint (Fairfax, Va.) and sophomore Alex Naime (Toluca, Mexico).

"The guys are shattered, they really though that this was a game they could win," Gettler said. "It was a great performance."

The Spiders honored for seniors prior to the game. Mich Fisher (Ithaca, N.Y.), Chris Lahoud (Forth Worth, Texas), Steven Wolfe (Richmond, Va.) and Vint were honored on Senior Night.

Richmond will play its last game of the season on Sunday against Saint Louis at First Market Stadium. The Spiders will celebrate 30 years of Richmond soccer before the game.
