Men's Soccer Falls To Saint Louis in Season Finale

Nov. 6, 2005

Box Score

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - The University of Richmond men's soccer team lost to Saint Louis 3-0 Sunday in the season finale at First Market Stadium.

The Billikens, who improved to 9-5-3 overall and 6-1-2 in the Atlantic 10, scored two goals in the first 12 minutes of the game and never looked back in winning for the seventh time in the last 10 games. Saint Louis added a goal in the 59th minute to make it 3-0.

"I thought the first half was a good game that was well played," Richmond head coach Jeff Gettler said. "They got two soft goals, we just made mistakes that gave them two easy goals. In the second half the game flattened out, they had want they wanted. It was a great effort for us. You can't fault the competitiveness and passion, it just wasn't good enough."

Saint Louis got on the scoreboard just 8:22 into the game on a corner kick by Jon DiRaimondo that set up a goal for Alex Matteson from 10 yards out. Less than three minutes, Saint Louis keeper Jeff Sackman blasted a punt that took a deep bounce deep into Richmond's end, where Ryan Wileman came up with it and setup Kyle Patterson for a goal.

The Billikens added their third goal in the second half when Dan Guffey's throw-in was taken by Wileman, and Wileman chipped it over the keeper's head and into the back of the net.

Richmond sophomore goalkeeper Eric Sciocchetti (Wallingford, Pa.) made nine saves in goal and freshman Matt Cully (Mt. Laurel, N.J.) had two saves in 27 minutes.

Richmond ends the season with a 4-8-6 record and 0-5-4 mark in the Atlantic 10. The Spiders went one stretch during the season where they lost one time in 10 games. Richmond's school-record six ties was one short of the nation record.

The game was the last of their Richmond careers for seniors Micah Fisher, Chris Lahoud, Colin Vint and Steven Wolfe.

The four seniors have played a major part in the Spiders' success over the last four seasons. In 2002, they played in the NCAA Tournament and in 2003, they were members of the team that went undefeated in Atlantic 10 regular season play to earn a share of the conference title.

Vint is currently ranked 10th on the school's all-time goals list with 21 tallies and is 11th on the all-time points list with 55, just one point out of the 10th spot. The four-year starter is a two-time first-team All-Conference selection and was named to the NSCAA/Adidas All-South Atlantic third-team as a sophomore.

Lahoud is a four-year starter as a back who has played in 67 games, starting 65. He has eight-career goals and eight-career assists for 24 points.

Wolfe is a three-year starter as a midfielder who has played in 62 games in his career with 37 starts. He has scored six career goals, including a team-high five last season and has eight assists for 20 career points.

Fisher has played in 58 games during his four-year career, starting games in each of his four seasons. He has scored two goals, including a game-winner against Penn State in his first collegiate game.
