Men's Soccer Opens 2008 Season Friday At Lehigh

Aug. 27, 2008

SpiderTV PREVIEW

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Richmond men's soccer team opens the 2008 season on Friday night at 5 p.m. when the Spiders play at Lehigh.

Richmond welcomes a talented group of newcomers who join a talented group of experienced returnees. The Spiders were bitten by the injury bug last year, and have suffered some injuries in the preseason, but are ready to go for Friday's season opener. Richmond is undefeated in its last three season openers (2-0-1), including a 2-1 win over Villanova last season.

"Lehigh should be a good test for us," Richmond assistant coach Matt O'Toole said. "We had two scrimmages in the preseason and rotated a bunch of guys through so we should be ready to go Friday."

With injuries ravaging the Spiders' attack last season, Richmond will look to increase its goal scoring in 2008.

"Coming off last season we expect a lot from our front runners to put goals in the back of the net," O'Toole said. "We're excited about the attack and look forward to starting Friday."

Richmond plays just one game this weekend, before playing in the VCU/Alltell Classic next weekend at Sports Backers Stadium. The Spiders will face Seton Hall next Friday, Sept. 5 at 5:30 p.m. and take on Bryant on Sunday, Sept. 7 at 1 p.m.

Richmond's home opener is against VCU on Sept. 17 at First Market Stadium.
