Richmond Downs Albany, 62-48

Nov. 22, 2008

Final Stats

ALBANY, N.Y. - Richmond (3-0) secured its third win of the season with a convincing 62-48 victory over the Albany Great Danes (0-4) Saturday afternoon. With the win, the Spiders boast their best record since the 2004-05 season. Sophomore Brittani Shells scored a game-high 16 points.

Richmond started the game on a 10-2 run and never looked back. The Spiders have never trailed in their past two games.

"We found ways to get easy shots," head coach Michael Shafer said. "I think it's a credit to our willingness to win. I thought we played unselfishly, and made plays we had to make."

After a 6-0 run by the Great Danes to start the second half, Richmond regained control.

"Albany came out of the half ready to attack," said Shafer. "I thought we responded well with deflections and easy baskets."

Shells led all scorers with 16 points. Thirteen of Shells' 16 came in the second half.

"The intensity was higher in the second half," said Shells. "We played with more cohesiveness."

Three other Spiders scored in double-figures. Junior Nikita Thomas netted 12 points, and Johanna McKnight and freshman Abby Oliver scored 10 points apiece.

Guard Janea Aiken led the Great Danes in scoring with 15 points.

The Spiders return to action Tuesday night when they travel to Longwood University. Tip-off is slated for 7:00 p.m.
