Final Stats

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - Three Spiders scored in double-figures as Richmond (6-0) won the Double Tree Classic 64-46 over host Tennessee-Chattanooga (2-3) Saturday night. Sophomore Brittani Shells was named as the Tournament MVP. The 6-0 mark is the Spider's best since the 2004-05 season.

Richmond took the lead 11-8, with 14:13 remaining in the first half and never looked back. The Spiders shot 50 percent from the field and grabbed 10 steals in the first half. The Spiders held an impressive 37-19 advantage at the break.

"We played with great athleticism," said head coach Michael Shafer. "We didn't want them to have their first option. Our game plan was to swarm Shanara Hollinquest, which we did well."

Shells scored a season-high 22 points to go along with two assists and two steals.

"They overlooked us," said Shells. "We played hard and came out on top."

Following Shells in the scoring category was senior Johanna McKnight and Danielle Bell with 14 points apiece. McKnight's 14 tied a season-high.

"This game gives us a ton of confidence," said McKnight. "It shows how much we've grown as a team. It feels great."

Richmond led by as many as 24 in the second half, and edged the Lady Mocs on the boards, 32-30.

"I'm very proud of my girls," said Shafer. "We didn't show fatigue. I am very impressed and pleased with our performance."

Senior Johanna McKnight, junior Danielle Bell and sophomore Brittani Shells were all named to the All-Tournament team, with Shells earning MVP honors.

Richmond returns to action Wednesday night when the cross-town rival VCU Rams come to the Robins Center. Tip-off is slated for 7:00 p.m.
