Class of 2012 Arrives On Campus

Aug. 25, 2008

University of Richmond, Va. - The University of Richmond women's basketball program welcomed the class of 2012 to campus on Wednesday. The class of 2012 includes twin sisters Rachael and Samantha Bilney from Mill Valley, Calif., Abby Oliver from Roanoke, Va., and Joyous Tharrington from Lynchburg, Va.

"We're obviously excited to have four new faces on campus," Richmond head coach Michael Shafer said. What's really exciting is what these four student-athletes bring individually and collectively to our team. We recruited all four because we felt they were strong competitors and winners. I believe with the addition of these four ladies, the competition level at practice and during the game will rise."

As the class prepares for an exciting experience at the University of Richmond, each freshman was interviewed as to what they were looking forward to as a new member of the Spider basketball family.

Rachael Bilney:

What are you going to miss the most about leaving home?

I am going to miss the most are my parents. We have always been a really tight bunch, and as my dad said when we were leaving, "I'm losing my two best buds."

Samantha Bilney:

What are you looking forward to the most as you enter a new chapter in your life at the University of Richmond?

I'm looking forward to playing great competition on the court, that's paired with an incredible education, while learning how to be independent.

Abby Oliver:

Why did you choose the University of Richmond?

I chose the University of Richmond because I loved the players, coaches and the beautiful campus.

Joyous Tharrington:

What are your thoughts, feelings and expectations for the upcoming basketball season?

I feel like this will be a breakout season for our team. I think everyone is ready to come in and work hard to achieve our goals. I am excited and anxious about everything!

Official practice for the women's basketball team will begin on October 17th.
