Fast Breaks:
Richmond returns eight players and welcomes six new faces to the squad. Redshirt senior Christina Campion continues to fill a big leadership role both on and off the court for head coach Michael Shafer's Spiders. She is the most experienced player on this year's roster.
Redshirt senior, Christina Campion, was selected to the Atlantic 10 Preseason All-Conference team. The 6-0 forward from Hamilton Square, N.J. led the Spiders with 10.4 ppg in 2006-077 and was the team's second-leading rebounder (5.1 rpg). She is the lone senior on this year's roster.
The Spiders fell to the ninth ranked Georgia Lady Bulldogs in their season opener in Athens, Ga., 81-53. It was a homecoming for Shafer. Richmond's head coach is a native of Athens and coached under Georgia legend, Andy Landers for 11 years before heading to Richmond in 2005.
Redshirt senior and preseason Atlantic 10 All-Conference selection, Christina Campion recorded four points against Georgia giving her 1,001 points in her career. She finished up the 2006-07 season just three points shy at 997. Camps now joins the "1,000 Point Club," joining former teammates Kate Flavin, Saona Chapman and Amber Goppert. After a 12 pt. performance at Kennesaw St., Camps now has 1,013 career points.
Freshman Brittani Shells, out of Camden, Del., led the Spiders in the first game of the 2007-08 season with 13 points. She also led Richmond with 25 points in their exhibition game against Athletes in Action on Monday, November 5. Shells scored over 1,400 points during her high school career at Carvel Academy.
Richmond's Katie Holzer has averaged 11.5 points per game in the season's first two games. Coach Shafer designed a play for Katie with just seconds left in the KSU game. Holzer drew the foul going hard to the basket to get on the free throw line. She sunk one free throw to give the Spiders the win, 61-60, ending the Georgia road trip 1-1.
The Spiders have played Fairfield twice, winning both times, in 1993 and 2006. Richmond won in 2006, 59-48. Now-senior Christina Campion led the Spiders with 16 points in last year's meeting.
While Richmond has three games (one exhibition) under their belts, Fairfield is coming to Richmond for their first game of the season. Joe Frager is in his first year at Fairfield after spending nine-years at Southern Connecticut State University. At SCSU, Frager led his team to post-season play each of those nine seasons.
Up Next: Richmond travels West on I-64 to Charlottesville to face off against in-state rival Virginia Cavaliers, Sunday November 18, at 2 p.m. ET.
