Hokies Hand Richmond A One Goal Loss

BLACKSBURG, Va. - Junior Allison Furstenburg netted six goals and added two assists as Richmond fell to Virginia Tech, 16-15. Mandy Friend also played an impressive game for the Spiders recording four goals and two assists for six total points. The first half ended at an even 10-10, but the Hokies were able to one-up the Spiders in the second half to earn the win.

Richmond travelled to Blacksburg for its first away game of the 2008 season after playing five straight games at First Market Stadium.

Three straight goals from Furstenburg gave the Spiders a two goal cushion after trailing by one to the Hokies with 11:46 to play in the game. The attacker scored her last goal with just six minutes to play in regulation.

Virginia Tech's Kady McBrearty answered Furstenburg with a two-goal run of her owns, hitting the net two times in just 55 seconds to tie the game at 15 with just over four minutes to play. The Hokies found the net with just over one minute in the game off a goal from Allie Emala to give them the 16-15 victory.

The Hokies out-shot the Spiders by just three, taking 33 shots to Richmond's 30. The Spiders' scoring was spread with six different players hitting the back of the net. Along with Furstenburg and Friend, Lexie Marrocco notched two goals while Jenna Hubbard, Jules Nicola and Anne Ryan both scored a goal a piece for the Spiders.

Six of the Spiders' 15 goals were assisted; Furstenburg and Friend both recorded two helpers, while Marrocco and Ryan both added one.

Up next for the Spiders, they continue their three straight road games as they head to College Park to take on the Terps Wednesday, March 12 at 7 p.m. ET. Richmond will then head to in-state rival James Madison University March 15 for a 1 p.m. ET game.
