University of Richmond, Va. - The Richmond women's lacrosse team recently participated in the 2008 American Cancer Society "Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk." The Spiders completed the 5k walk by trekking through Byrd Park located in downtown Richmond. The event was in recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

The "Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk" event has been held in cities throughout the nation, helping to raise money for the American Cancer Society. The Richmond lacrosse team, along with the coaches raised $3,700 in support of the breast cancer cause. That total doubles what they raised last year.

"I am so proud of this year's team for taking such an active role in the Richmond community," said assistant coach Alli Nuzzi. "I would like to give a huge thank you to the players, their family and friends who came to walk with us and the University of Richmond Athletic Department staff who helped us raise $3,700. This fundraising effort helped place our team in the top 10 fundraising and awareness raising groups to participate in the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer event."

Members of the lacrosse team enjoyed the event, and diligently raised money for their team.

"This was my second year participating," said senior attack Lexie Marrocco. "I have a great aunt who died, an aunt who was a survivor and my best friend's mother survived the disease. I could not have felt more proud and honored to walk for not only them, but for every survivor."

Added senior midfield Sarah Townsend, "As a team, being a part of the walk is a truly invaluable experience in many ways. Raising awareness for a cause sincerely allows us to be both a small part of a positive achievement and to grow as individuals by learning through the struggles and successes of those affected by breast cancer."

The Richmond event helped raised over $575,000 that will be put towards breast cancer research, education and advocacy.
