Spider Soccer Runs Monument Ave 10K For Massey Cancer Center

April 4, 2007

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - The Richmond women's soccer team joined over 25,000 other runners in the Monument Avenue 10K road race on March 31.

The 21 players and coaches who comprise the 2007 Spring Team, along with distinguished alums Jaclyn Raveia, Nicole (Froman) Marks, Brooke (Sands) Roney, Courtney (Morgan) Stevenson and Anne Rieser caravanned down Cary Street on a beautiful sunny Saturday morning and joined the running masses in a colorful, musical celebration of running.

The Spiders planned this activity as way to raise money for the Massey Cancer Center. Assistant coach Brooke Roney organized a fundraising effort that applied the efforts of the entire team and the SpiderSoccer alumni base to the task of raising money for this important cause, raising over $4,800, with pledges still coming in.

"Running 6.2 miles is no easy task for these players," said Head Coach Peter Albright. "This is outside the `comfort zone' that our players usually train in. I am so proud of their leadership and commitment in following through with this race and fundraising effort."

"The team had a blast, represented the University very well, and raised a lot of money for an important cause." The Spiders are planning to run again next year and are shooting to break the fundraising total.

The efforts of the team were featured on Channel 8 WRIC news, in the Richmond Times Dispatch, and in releases by Sportsbackers.
