Regionally Ranked Foes Face-Off Friday

Aug. 27, 2008

University of Richmond, Va. - The Richmond Spiders and VCU Rams were ranked tenth and ninth respectively, according to Soccer Buzz Magazine. Additionally, Richmond was ranked seventh in the Mid-Atlantic region by the National Coaches Association of America.

The Spiders (1-0) hope to continue their winning streak against the VCU Rams Friday night.

"We have a great rivalry with VCU," Richmond head coach Peter Albright said. "The "City Championship" always looms disproportionately large, and it's always a great atmosphere. Last year, head coaches Tiffany and Tim Sahaydak did a fantastic job of preparing their team. I expect the same total commitment from last year, and we have to match it. "

The Spiders look to avenge last year's 1-0 thriller. Junior June Hartman scored VCU's lone goal with a header assisted from senior back Michelle Schuler. Richmond currently leads the series 6-5-1.

"My goal is to play a full 90 minutes with total effort and concentration," Albright said. "We love playing at home. We feel like to university is really behind us, and we're excited to put a good performance together on Friday night."

After Friday's game, the Spiders will travel to Farmville Sunday night where they will play Longwood University. Kick-off is slated for 7 p.m.
