Freshmen Shine, But Swimming Edged At William & Mary
Nov. 7, 2008
WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - The Richmond swimming team got solid performances from its freshmen, but suffered a narrow 167.5-126.5 loss at William & Mary Friday night in Williamsburg. Rookie Charlotte Brackett turned in a trio of gold-medal finishes, while senior Lauren Beaudreau won four events for the Spiders. Brackett won the 50 free (24.03), the 100 free (52.56) and was on the first-place 200 medley relay (1:46.69) in Friday's dual meet. Also for Richmond, freshman Mary Anne Lerro was second in the 100 breast (1:07.83) and freshman Alexi Kuska was second in the 1,000 free (10:25.20). "I'm pleased with the growth of our freshmen," said head coach Matt Barany. "They seem to be gaining traction earlier than usual. Charlotte is beginning to believe in herself and showed some of her speed tonight." Senior Lauren Beaudreau turned in a trio of individual gold-medal finishes in the 100 breast (1:07.49), the 200 breast (2:23.59) and the 200 IM (2:08.89) and also swam on the 200 medley relay. "Lauren put together two weeks of focused energy and she put great swims at the end of those two weeks tonight," said Barany. Senior Alex Helland won the 100 back (59.41), while junior Katie Sieben won the 100 fly (56.23) and was second -- to Brackett -- in the 50 free (24.22). Helland and Sieben comprised the other half of the 200 medley relay.
The Spiders return to action Nov. 20-21 at the Terrapin Invitational. |
