Baseball Drops Season Opener to Army

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The University of Richmond baseball team fell 8-0 to Army Friday at the Swig & Swine College Classic in the squad's season opener.
UR starter Jeremy Neff (West Palm Beach, Fla.) retired the side to open the contest, including tallying one of his four strikeouts to end the frame. Neff (0-1) went four innings in the loss, allowing two runs, one walk and one hit batter.
Six different Spiders collected hits. Jared Sprague-Lott (Philadelphia, Pa.) legged out a double in the first inning and drew a walk in the eighth. Both times he was left stranded.
Transfers Andrew Papantonis (Lebanon Township, N.J.) and Jackson Petersen (Libertyville, Ill.) tallied back-to-back base hits in the second inning while Will Gersky (Woodbury, Conn.) chipped in a base hit to start the fourth for their first hits as a Spider.
Dominic Toso (Philadelphia, Pa.) reached in the sixth, but was erased on the base path on a double-play. In the eighth inning, Johnny Hipsman (Chester, N.Y.) reached on a base hit up the middle, then erased on a double-play. Alden Mathes (Broomall, Pa.) extended the frame after getting hit, then Sprague-Lott drew a two-out walk, but both were left stranded.
Pinch-hitter Chase Conklin (Mullica Hill, N.J.) drew a walk in the bottom of the ninth, but the Spider offense couldn't get him around.
Brenden Argomaniz (Claremont, Calif.) took over for Neff on the hill in the fifth, going 2.2 innings allowing only one walk, one hit and hit one batter. Antonio Balducci (Midlothian, Va.) picked up the third out of the seventh with a strikeout, then faced three batters in the eighth, allowing three earned runs on two hits and one walk.
Winston Allen (Morristown, N.J.) made his Richmond debut in the eighth, facing five batters, giving up one walk, hit a batter and tallied a strikeout.
In the ninth, freshman Jake Michel (Baltimore, Md.) got two outs in the frame, allowing three runs on two hits, with one walk. Matthew Haines (Mechanicsville, Va.) made his Spider debut, striking out the one batter he faced to end the inning.
Richmond is back in action at the Swig & Swine College Classic Saturday against Bucknell. First pitch is set for noon.
