Elbeery Paces Spiders with Five Hits in Win at JMU

HARRISONBURG, Va. – University of Richmond freshman Jake Elbeery (North Andover, Mass.) posted a career-high 5-for-5 day at the plate to lead the Spiders to a 10-2 victory over James Madison Tuesday at Eagle Field at Veterans Memorial Park. The Spiders improved to 17-16 on the year while the Dukes move to 19-17 for the season.
Richmond jumps back to Atlantic 10 action, hosting George Washington for a weekend series starting Friday with a 2:30 p.m. first pitch at Pitt Field.
Spider starter Rob Ready (Cape May, N.J.) got the win, allowing only two hits and no walks with two strikeouts in a season-high three innings of work. Esteban Rodriguez (Doral, Fla.) allowed two runs on five hits and two walks with five strikeouts in four innings on the mound. Winston Allen (Morristown, N.J.) tossed the final two innings for Richmond, allowing one hit and two walks with a strikeout.
The Spiders jumped on the Dukes starter, tagging him for three runs in the top of the first. Andrew Papantonis (Lebanon Township, N.J.) singled in Dominic Toso (Philadelphia, Pa.) for the Spiders first run before Johnny Hipsman (Chester, N.Y.) scored on a wild pitch. Elbeery laced his first hit of the day through the right side to push the lead to 3-0.
Chase Conklin (Mullica Hill, N.J.) tallied his first of two hits on the day and first of two RBIs in the second, scoring Jason Neff (West Palm Beach, Fla.) who led off the inning with a triple.
Christian Beal (Flossmoor, Ill.) picked up his two RBI of the game in the fourth, scoring Elbeery and Jared Sprague-Lott (Philadelphia, Pa.) with a hit to left center field.
With back-to-back hits from Elbeery and Sprague-Lott, Neff reached on a fielder's choice to load the bases in the sixth. Conklin tallied his second hit to right to collect his second RBI scoring Elbeery. Alden Mathes (Broomall, Pa.) collected two RBI with a single through the infield to push the Spiders lead to 9-1.
Elbeery tallied his fifth hit of the game in the ninth, singling to center to score Toso for the 10-2 final score.
