Spider Baseball Drops Series Opener to GW

RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond baseball team dropped an 8-3 decision to open the Atlantic 10 Conference series against George Washington Friday at Pitt Field. With the loss Richmond falls to 17-17 on the year and 2-9 in the A-10, while GW moves to 18-19 on the season and 6-4 in league action.
The second game of the series is set for a 1 p.m. first pitch Saturday at Pitt Field on ESPN+.
GW jumped onto the score board first, tallying a run in the second off of Richmond starter Brock Weirather (Polk City, Fla.). Weirather battled, but after a 25-minute injury delay one pitch into the third inning, the GW offense collected three runs on three hits and one walk to expand their lead to 4-0.
The Colonials added two more in the fourth off of Weirather, before Brenden Argomaniz (Claremont, Calif.) got the first of four strikeouts on the day to get end the frame. Weirather (4-3) took the loss, allowing six runs, five earned on seven hits, four walks, one hit batter and four strikeouts in 3.2 innings of work.
Argomaniz tossed five more innings of relief for Richmond, scattering two runs on five hits, while walking one, hitting two and striking out four. He held GW scoreless for three innings.
The Richmond offense broke up the shutout in the fourth when Chase Conklin (Mullica Hill, N.J.) singled through the middle to score Johnny Hipsman (Chester, N.Y.) after his leadoff double.
Drew Beno (Loxahatchee, Fla.), in his first start of the season at third base, got the Spiders going with a base hit to right in the fifth. Christian Beal (Flossmoor, Ill.) and Alden Mathes (Broomall, Pa.) continued the hit train, but Richmond only got one run in the frame off of Sprague-Lott's single to right.
D.J. Pacheco (Danvers, Mass.) tallied a double in the sixth and Mathes picked up a double to lead off the seventh. It wasn't until the ninth when the Spiders connected three two-out base hits, by Sprague-Lott, Hipsman and Jake Elbeery (North Andover, Mass.) with the RBI hit, that UR was able to get a base runner past second.
