05/14/2022 | Baseball
The Spiders move to 23-23 on the year and 8-12 in Atlantic 10 Conference action. The Flyers move to 22-24 on the season and 9-11 in league play.
The final game of the series is set for a noon first pitch Sunday at Woerner Field at ASE Ohio Stadium.
The Flyers scored first in the bottom of the first inning, collecting a run on a sacrifice fly.
Jason Neff (West Palm Beach, Fla.) got the Spiders on the board in the top of the second with his sixth home run of the season.
Dayton picked up two more runs in the bottom of the second off of Richmond starter Jeremy Neff (West Palm Beach, Fla.) to take a 3-1 lead. Jeremy Neff settled down to throw two-plus shutout innings and worked into the fifth. Jeremy Neff scattered three runs on seven hits, five walks and five strikeouts over four-plus innings.
Jared Sprague-Lott (Philadelphia, Pa.) tied the game at 3-all in the top of the sixth with a two-run home run, his fourth of the year.
Eli Larson (Mill Valley, Calif.) took over for Jeremy Neff to get out of a bases loaded situation without allowing a run to score. In his second inning of work, Larson gave up all three runs on three hits and two walks in the sixth inning.
Esteban Rodriguez (Doral, Fla.) worked a scoreless seventh, getting the final two outs of the inning at second, picking off one himself and Jason Neff throwing out a runner trying to steal.
With the momentum as the first batter in the top of the eight Jeremy Neff got the Spiders rally going with a base hit to right. Sprague-Lott followed with a base hit of his own before advancing to third and second on a ground out. D.J. Pacheco (Danvers, Mass.) laced a two-out double to left center to score both and get the Spiders within one, 6-5.
Christian Beal (Flossmoor, Ill.) drew a walk before Alden Mathes (Broomall, Pa.) reached on a Dayton fielding error to load the bases. Dominic Toso (Philadelphia, Pa.) brought Pacheco and Beal in with a base hit to take a 7-6 lead.
Unfortunately, Dayton got to Spider relievers to score seven runs on five hits and three walks to take a 13-7 lead.
Jason Neff picked up a career-high fourth hit to lead off the top of the ninth. Jake Elbeery (North Andover, Mass.) collected his second hit of the game and both advanced a base each on a Dayton fielding error. Sprague-Lott picked up Neff with a sacrifice fly to center for the Spiders eighth run of the game.
