Elbeery Blasts 3-Run Home Run in 10th for Win Over Tribe

RICHMOND, Va. – With two on and one out in the bottom of 10th inning, University of Richmond's Jake Elbeery (North Andover, Mass.) sent a three-run blast over the right center wall for the 14-11 victory over William & Mary Tuesday at Pitt Field. The Spiders (3-1) have won their third straight game, while the Tribe (3-1) fall for the first time this season.
"Jake Elbeery had a great hit to win it for us," head coach Tracy Woodson said. "But the backend of our relievers did a tremendous job to keep us in it."
The offense came early and often for both teams. The Spiders answered the Tribe's single run in the first with two of their own as Christian Beal (Flossmoor, Ill.) scored on a ground out and Alden Mathes (Broomall, Pa.) crossed the plate on a Dominic Toso (Philadelphia., Pa.) base hit.
Down 6-2 through three innings, Will Gersky (Woodbury, Conn.) hit his first home run of his Spider career, picking up Toso, to move within two runs in the bottom of the fourth.
The Tribe added two more runs in the top of the fifth. Again, Richmond responded with two more of their own. Beal scored from first on a Mathes base hit up the middle of the field. Toso followed with a sharp base hit of his own to bring in Mathes.
After UR reliever Vincent Corso (West Harrison, N.Y.) worked around a lead-off walk, he was able to keep the Tribe off the board for the second time in the sixth. Richmond got within one, 8-7, in the bottom of the frame on Gersky's second home run of the day.
The Tribe picked up two more runs to extend their lead to 10-7 in the seventh. With base hits from Mathes and Jared Sprague-Lott (Philadelphia, Pa.), Toso drew a walk to load the bases. Elbeery drew a one-out walk to force in the first Spider run of the inning, while Andrew Papantonis (Lebanon Township, N.J.) was hit by the pitch to force in the second.
Freshman reliever Esteban Rodriguez (Doral, Fla.) came out for his second inning in the eighth, holding the Tribe to just one run and tallying his second strike out of the day.
In the bottom of the eight, Beal lead off the inning reaching base on a hit-by-pitch, followed by Mathes' fourth hit of the night. Toso loaded the bases with his third of four hits with pinch-hitter Chase Conklin (Mullica Hill, N.J.) drawing a walk to force in Mathes to get the Spiders within one at 11-10.
Freshman Rob Ready (Cape May, N.J.) threw a scoreless top of the ninth in his first appearance for Richmond.
In the bottom half of the frame, Beal hit a single to left field to score Papantonis from second to tie the game at 11.
Brenden Argomaniz (Claremont, Calif.) came out for the top of the 10th, retiring the Tribe in order for the second straight inning. Argomaniz (1-0) picked up his first win of his collegiate career.
Toso collected a career-high fourth hit of the day to lead off the home half of the 10th. D.J. Pacheco (Danvers, Mass.), pinch running for Toso, advanced to second on a wild pitch. With one out, the Tribe elected to intentionally walk Gersky. On a 1-2 pitch, Elbeery won the Spiders third-straight game with his first collegiate home run over the right center wall.
Jacob Marcus (Malvern, Pa.) got the start for Richmond, going two-plus innings, allowing five runs on six hits, walking two and striking out two. Graduate student Jesse Heikkinen (Holt, Mich.) made his Richmond debut, allowing three runs on three hits, three walks and two strikeouts over 2.2 innings.
Richmond returns to Pitt Field to host St. Thomas (MN) Thursday. First pitch is set for 1:45 on ESPN-Plus.
